Maria came to the United States from Ylistaro, Finland in May 1889 and married Leander Peterson at Wakefield on November 5, 1889. They had five children before Leander was killed in a premature mine explosion in 1897.
Maria returned to Ylistaro, Finland (1898-99) with her children after Leander's death. She returned to Wakefield, MI again on April 10, 1899 and married Hiskias Johnson on November 16, 1899.
In the spring of 1902 Hiskias and Maria purchased the homestead rights to a parcel of land on section 24 in Clark township near Tamarack, Minnesota.
