Ludowici, Ga. – April 23 – The funeral of Judge J. I. Daniel, prominent citizen of Liberty County, who died Sunday morning at Flemington, was held at the Flemington Presbyterian Church this afternoon and interment took place at the cemetery there. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. M. Rustin, pastor of the Hinesville Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Clark, Methodist evangelist and the Rev. J. W. Miller, pastor of the Flemington Presbyterian Church.

Joseph "Joe" Israel Daniel,
Forth child of Captain Enoch and Anna Eliza Bird Daniel, was born at Taylors Creek, Georgia on October 1, 1842.
He attended Emory College at Oxford, Georgia where he was preparing to become a doctor; but, before reaching this goal, he was called into Confederate service.
Joe joined Captain William Hughes' cavalry company, the "Liberty Guards" which became Company B, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry. He served with the unit in picketing along the coast.
In 1863 the unit became Company D, 5th Georgia Cavalry. After forays into South Carolina and Florida, the regiment was called to Atlanta to join Major General Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
In June 1864 the "Guards" saw action at the Battle of Noonday Church. The "Guards" was pretty well shot up and Private Daniel was wounded in the hip.
His jacket is preserved in the Midway Museum at Midway, Georgia. Joe survived the wound and was paroled at Savannah on May 5, 1865.
In his later years, his mode of transportation was a black buggy with his trusted steed, "Old Gray." His other companion was his birddog named Kermit.
He died on April 23, 1923. JOE DANIEL

NOTE; Joe's father, Enoch Daniel, organized the Liberty Guards in 1845 and was the first Captain of the unit. He kept command until 1857 when the unit moved to Jones Creek.
