Aseneth Garwood Preston was born October 10, 1821 in Marion, Hardin, Ohio, being the daughter of Jesse Garwood and Sidney Gregg. She married William Preston May 15, 1842 in Hardin County, Ohio. To this union were born 9 children, of whom were born in Ohio. (Robert and Sarah.) From Ohio they briefly moved to Avon, Lake, Illinois and at this time, Asenath's husband William, made the family comfortable and headed off to the Goldrush in California. Son, Alonzo "Lon", was born here. At this time, Aseneth, knitted and sold socks to support the family, but William was gone so long that Aseneth's father Jesse had mistaken him for dead and moved them back to Ohio for awhile where Aseneth was able to teach school. In a few years, their father returned with the magnificent fortune of $2500. Tired of clearing forests, he took the family to the praries of Iowa and settled in Jones County, settling near Anamosa. Their 6 remaining children were born here: Sylvester, Katherine, Sylvanna "Sylvia", Loranzo, Relando, and Alena "Lena" and they all grew up on the Wapsipinicon River.
