Born in Bolton Percy, England to William Preston and Ann Powell, he married Asenath Garwood on May 15, 1842 in Hardin County, Ohio. In 1850, William went to California to participate in the goldrush, settling his family first in Illinois. He returned with the magnificent fortune of $2500! With this money, he moved his family to the Iowa Prairie, where they settled near Anamosa, Iowa.

Family tradition said that William left Asenath and remarried, having a whole other family in Arkansas. Because of DNA, we haven proven this to be true indeed. He married Permelia Furlow and had 5 more children: William Oscar, Delia Charlotte, Samuel Sanford, Melissa Gertrude, and Amanda Isabell.

"Robert Preston's father showed him a big rock near Shaberg, not far from Winslow, where his, Oscar's, daddy was buried. He tried in later years to find it again but was never successful. Oscar did, before he passed away have a headstone placed in the Coyle Cemetery for his daddy." ~Told by Bobby Thompson
