R5726 Avro Lancaster I took off from RAF Syerston at unknown time. During the flight the aircraft suffered a mid air explosion. The aircraft crashed at 1545hrs close to Branston village and the southern end of Knipton Reservoir. All crew were killed.

KILLED IN AIR CRASH

Many friends gathered at St. Mary's Church on Monday to pay a tribute to pay a tribute to the memory of a well known and popular young airman, Flight Sergeant Engineer Sidney Chappell, who was killed in an air crash last week. Sergt Chappell was only 19 years of age and was the second son of Mr and Mrs A. W. Chappell. Of North End, South Kelsey. He was born at Howsham and educated at Grantham Boys Central School, and volunteered for the R.A.F. about a year ago. Prior to joining up he was employed by Messrs G H Layne and Co, of Brigg.
The impressive funeral service was conducted by the rector, the Rev. R. Ireland, and the hymns "Abide with me," and "Lead us heavenly Father" were sung. With Mr. H. Balderson at the organ, The coffin was borne by four sergeants of the R.A.F.

The mourners included Mr and Mrs A W Chapple, father and mother; Miss Spittlehouse, Brigg, fiancee; Messrs W and J Chappell, brothers, Misses Madge and Barbara Chappell, sisters; Mr. and Mrs J Chappell, grandfather and grandmother, North Kelsey; Mr. and Mrs J Chappell (Hibaldstow). Me and Mrs P. Chappel (North Kelsey), Mr and Mrs Hodge, Mrs F Sheardown, Mrs Storey, Mr C Bell, (aunts and uncles), Mr and Mrs P Chappell (Twigmore), Mrs Wood (Kirton Lindsey), Miss J Hodges, Mr J Bell, cousins; Mr and Mrs Spittlehouse (Brigg), Mr Birkett, Brigg (representing – remainder lost
