David is the son of William and Mary Mearns. He married Mildred Sellers Haines and they had a daughter, Anne Almy Mearns. In 1920 and 1930 David worked as both a clerk and a research assistant in the Library of Congress.
He married second, Mary Hume Richardson, who died 2 Sept 1981.
