Le Roy Van Booven, devoted husband, dad, and granddad, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the age of 80 in Seguin , Texas . He was born on December 27, 1930 in Rhineland , Missouri to Zeno Ludwig and Genevieve Clara Van Booven. Le Roy is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bernice, and his children and their spouses, Sharon Frederickson and husband Tony, Ree Kaplan and husband Ed, Vanette Stephenson and husband Jim, David Van Booven and wife Teresa, and Steve Van Booven and wife Tina. He also has nine beautiful grandchildren, Derek, Samantha, Devin, Madison, Ashley, Tyler, Logan, Christopher, Tony and wife, Rose. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Van Booven and wife, Elladean, and his sister, Velora, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Zeno and Genevieve, and a baby sister, Mardell.
Le Roy and Bernie had a whirlwind engagement and married on July 8, 1950 in Glendale , Arizona , his first assignment after joining the military. They traveled the world together because of this career choice. They lived in Arizona , Maine , New Mexico , North Carolina , France , Greenland, and Texas . When he retired from the Air Force in 1968, the Van Booven family moved to Seguin . Le Roy loved the hometown feel of Seguin and the wonderful people in the community. He had never been happier than he was when he was "home". A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He joined the Knights of Columbus 40 years ago. He was instrumental in getting the Knights of Columbus organization started in Seguin , so the men in this fraternity were very special to him. Until he became ill, he was also a volunteer at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center .
Le Roy proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from June 4, 1948 to September 30, 1968. He was only 17 years old when he joined the military to support the Berlin Airlift. He received several honors during that 20 year period, including the German Occupation Medal with the Air Lift, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humane Action Medal, and the Outstanding Unit Award. He truly loved his country, the military, and the friends he met throughout his career. After retiring from the Air Force, he started an Electrical Trades Program at Seguin High School . He taught for more than 20 years and put his heart and soul into teaching students to become electricians. He stayed in touch with many of his students long after he retired from SISD. He received many community awards and honors, all of which meant so much to him, but the two that meant the most to him were the Gazette Citizen of the Year Award and the Masonic Community Builder Award he received in 2000.
