Catherine Myers Bissell, 92, died on March 10, 2005, at the Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, Va., due to complications caused by the flu and pneumonia. Mrs. Bissell was the wife of the late Herman J. Bissell of Oxnard and a resident of Farmville, Va., for the past eight years. Catherine was born in Iowa in 1912 and spent the first 18 years of her life on a farm in the Afton and Creston areas. At 18, she ventured forth to Southern California and never looked back.She spent most of the next 65 years living in Southern California and considered it to be her home state. Age and illness forced her to move to Virginia in 1997 to live with her son and daughter-in-law. Advancing Alzheimer's disease began to take its toll in the early 2000s and a fall that resulted in a broken arm sent her to the hospital in December of 2004.Following her stay in the hospital, she became a resident of Holly Manor Nursing Home, where around the clock care and therapy were available. Those who knew Catherine remember her kindness, generosity and dedication to family. Catherine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn J. Navarro of Farmville, Va.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Josephine Henderickson of Oxnard. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo.
