US Congressman. Born in Manassas, Virginia, he was deputy sheriff of Prince William County and engaged in mercantile pursuits in Loudoun County in 1763. With the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he was commissioned a Major in the Continental Army, appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 16th Regiment of the Continental Line in 1777 and resigned on account of ill health in 1778. He was delegate to the Virginia ratification convention in 1788 and a a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1779, 1787-88, 1791-92). In 1799, he was elected as a Federalist to the Sixth Congress, serving until 1801. After his term he helped to build a turnpike at Alexandria, Virginia. He died at age 73 in Bedford, Virginia.
