20 Sept. 1878:
--Capt. Andrew S. Bennett, who fell in General Miles' fight with the hostile Bannacks, on the 5th inst., was appointed to the regular army from Wisconsin.
He was a citizen of Waukeslia (Waukesha), somewhat famous site of the Bethesda Springs. He has a sister still residing there, and this is believed to be his only living relation. Upon the breaking out of the war, Capt. Bennett enlisted in the First Wisconsin Volunteers, three months' regiment. On the 12th of July, 1861, he was appointed 2d Lieutenant of the Fifth Wisconsin, and in the following year was promoted 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant. On the close of the war, Capt. Bennett was employed for sometime in the School Land office at Madison, Wisconsin. On the 7th of March, 1867, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of the Fifteenth Infantry, and on the 28th of February, 1869,was promoted to Captain. In 1871, he was assigned to the Fifth Infantry, with which regiment he has since served. He was a gallant and faithful officer. --- Madisonian.

Post at Cheyenne River Agency, Dakota Territory, as Fort Bennett, in honor of Capt. Andrew S. Bennett, Fifth Infantry, killed September 4, 1878, in an affray with Bannack Indians near Clark's Fork, Montana Territory.
