He was born Sept. 22, 1949, in Madison, the son of Robert Donald Courtney Sr. and Edna Louise Cook. He was raised in Switzerland County, where he attended school and lived most of his life. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, from June 28, 1968, to Feb. 2, 1973, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. He worked for several years for Legge & Associates in Aurora and for Randy Ricketts in Vevay. He was a member of the Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his mother, Edna Cook Burns of Madison; one brother, Barry Courtney of Sardinia, Ohio; three sisters, Diana Kay Turner of Madison, Sharon Maiden of Scipio and Melissa Burnett of Madison; three nieces; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Tom and Maggie Cook, and the Rev. Leland and Myra Courtney.
The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery. Military honors were conducted graveside by Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396.
