Matilda was born 12 June 1837 in Alabama. Her family moved to Texas where she met Crawford Sylvanus Hefner and they were married about 1855 in Morris County, Texas (courthouse burned and there is no record of their marriage).
A cousin's recollection: When my great-grandpa, James Andrew Jackson Richey went to Arkansas at the start of the Civil War, his wife, Sarah Ann Truitt Richey and the two oldest children (Charles Warren and Elijah) went to live with Matilda at Lone Mountain, Upshur County, Texas. Matilda and her husband, C. S. Hefner, lived on a plantation about 5 miles east of Gilmer. Matilda and Crawford never had any children. She must have been a really nice person because she would take in kids (orphans and unwanted children) and raise them. I think Sarah and her kids stayed with Matilda for the whole time their husbands were fighting in the Civil War.
After the war, Sarah's family moved back to Pine Forest, TX and C. S. Hefner came home to Lone Mountain. The story goes that Matilda was out on the back porch churning butter when Crawford came limping up to the house. He had been injured in the War, but I don't know how.
One of the many children Matilda and Crawford raised was Mary Josephine Anglin. That's how Matilda's nephew, Elijah Truitt Richey met the woman he later married. When Mary Josephine died in 1894, Elijah was farming and could'nt or wouldn't raise his youngest child, Andrew Floyd Richey. "Aunt Mat went to Pine forest and took Andrew Floyd back home with her at Lone Mountain. She raised him until around 1906. Sometime in the early 1900's Aunt Mat and Crawford sold their plantation and moved into town (Gilmer). He died in 1905.
Aunt Mat married a "R. M. Dean" in 1907. Before he married her, he made her send Andrew Floyd back home. The story goes that this man married her for her money. Not long after they were married, Aunt Mat was found dead in her home by a neighbor.
