Mary Therese O'Connell

Mary Therese O'Connell, of Scranton and formerly of Kingston and Mountain Top, died July 21, 2011, in Allied Skilled Nursing Center. Her husband, Jerry L. Mills, preceded her in death. Born August 27, 1929, a daughter of the late Frank J. O'Connell Sr. and Mary Harkins O'Connell, she was a devout Catholic and proud of her Irish Heritage.
She was a 1947 graduate of Kingston High School and attended the Wyoming Seminary Business School.
Mary assisted in the family business, O'Connell's Kingston House, and in the rearing of younger siblings due to the premature loss of her mother. Mary and Jerry raised three children.
She enjoyed volunteering at St. Jude's School and Church, several hobbies, laughing with friends and family, and Irish music. She loved swimming, horses and sun on her face.
Mary's family extends a special thank you to Allied Skilled Nursing and Hospice Community Care for the friendship and care given to our beloved Mary O'Connell and the support given to our family over these last years. You made this journey a special one. Thank you to longtime physician, Dr. Barry Minora, for his dedication, excellent care and compassion.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Mangan; and a brother, Sen. Frank O'Connell Jr.
Surviving are children, Sheryl Mills, Mt. Cobb; Barbara Heidmous, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Thomas Mills of Park City, Utah; grandchildren, Jodi, in the Air Force; Bryan, Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Bridget Heidmous, completing her senior year of college; two sisters, Margaret Radaszewski, Wilkes-Barre, and Clair Pemperton of Vestal, N.Y.; and well as two brothers, John O'Connell, Kingston, and Robert O'Connell, Chapel Hill, N.C.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Gate of Heaven Church, 10 Machell Ave., Dallas.
Interment will be held in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Kingston.
Arrangements are by the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Scranton.
