Claire was preceded in death by her loving husband William, her parents Francis O'Connell and Mary Elizabeth Harkins O'Connell, siblings Francis (Mary), Dorothy (Joe), Mary Therese, (Jerry), Margaret (Frank) John and sister-in-law Dorothy (Stanley). Claire is survived by her cherished grandchildren Matthew (Olivia), Daniel (Natalie), Andrew, Patrick, William, Daniel, daughter-in-law Kathleen and great-grandchildren Colin and Isla, her brother Robert (Peg), sister-in-law Marilyn and the many nieces and nephews who she held so close.
Her life was full of many blessings as well as unspeakable hardships. Her indomitable spirit, endless courage and love of family pulled her through the toughest of moments. As a 1956 graduate of The University of Misericordia's Department of Education, Claire met Bill, her husband of 54 years when she moved to Binghamton, NY to start her career as a teacher. Nothing was as fun to witness/hear then when her husband Bill made her laugh. Together they had four children whom she loved endlessly. She adored being a Grandmother and absolutely loved being the Grandmother of 6 boys and great-grandmother of Colin and Isla. She told everyone she could about them.
She found great purpose through volunteer work and did so at her children's schools, her church and local community organizations. She was always on the lookout when a small gesture of cookies, a meal or a card could lift a friend's spirits. Within her own family, she tirelessly fostered the importance of family closeness and early on chose family and extended family connection to be her legacy. Claire stayed with us until all was settled and she lived gracefully, simply, fully and well. She kept everyone smiling and laughing. Her integrity, tenacity, generosity, and Irish charm will echo for generations in the memories of all who loved her.
If it is your wish to express your sympathy through a donation, Claire's love of animals would be reflected in donations to Nate's Honor Animal Rescue, 4951 Lorraine Road, Bradenton, Florida, 34211. A funeral mass will be held at 11am on Thursday October 20, 2022 at St. Vincent's De Paul Blessed Sacrament Church, 465 Clubhouse Road, Vestal, NY 13850. Burial will be private. A luncheon immediately following will be held at The Phelps Mansion, 191 Court Street, Binghamton, NY 13903. There will be a local celebration of Claire's life at Fox Hill Village, 10 Longwood Drive, Westwood, MA on November 2nd at 3pm.
