Mrs. Phyllis M. Smith, 81, of Independence, died Saturday afternoon at Bradford Place in Independence.

Cremation has taken place. Family conducted memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Independence with the Reverend Delores Williamston, pastor, officiating. Inurment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

The family as suggested memorial remembrances to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.

Phyllis Marie Smith was born October 21, 1929 at Independence, Kansas, the daughter of Clyde Russell Gehlbach and Audrey Mildred (Conner) Gehlbach. She attended Independence schools, graduating from Independence High School.
Phyllis spend most her adult life traveling the world as the wife of a career Army man. She loved that life and all the benefits from it; seeing foreign countries, learning about diverse cultures and making new friends. She returned to Independence in 1978 making this her final home.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Audrey Gehlbach and husbands William H. Wood and Leland L. Stephenson.

She is survived by : her husband Leslie (Dick) Smith formerly of Chanute; Children Denise and her husband Wayne Caughman of Ofallon, Illinois, Terry Wood of Tacoma, Washington, Robin Wood of Yelm, Washington and Mark Wood of Jacksonville, Florida; stepchildren, Connie and her husband John Clarkson, Paul and his wife Lorraine Smith and Peggy and her husband Mike Myers; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; and a sister, Karen (James) Gebhart of Columbus, Ohio.
