Leland Lloyd Stephenson, 83, of Independence, Kansas passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Mercy Hospital E.R., Independence, Kansas.

Leland was born January 28, 1920 in Independence, Kansas to Dr. H. G. and Marie (Woodard) Stephenson. He was raised and educated in Independence where he graduated from Independence High School in 1939. He later attended Independence Junior College and Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. He served in the U. S. Army in New Guenia and the Phillipines with a medical unit during World War II. He married Pauline Gaudet while he was in the service in New Orleans and they later divorced. He married Phyllis Gehlbach Wood on July 3, 1987. Leland was employed with Montgomery Ward for 10 years and with Beltone Hearing Aid Co. for 25 years in Independence where he served 5 counties in southeast Kansas as a certified hearing aid audioligist. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, AARP, life member of the V.F.W post 1186, Independence, Disabled American Veterans Association, and life member of the National Hearing Aid Society.

Leland is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Independence, Kansas; two sons, Greg Stephenson and wife, Linda of Maggie Valley, North Carolina and Michael Stephenson of Wichita, Kansas; three step sons, Robin Wood and Terry Wood both of Washington and Mark Wood of Jacksonville, Florida; step daughter, Denise Caughman and Wayne of O'Fallon, Illinois; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marler of Waynesville, North Carolina and Shawn Stephenson of Maggie Valley, North Carolina; step grandchildren, Kathie Doane of Evansville, Illinois, Beth Staley of Biloxi, Mississippi, Mathew Wood and Nicole Wood both Tacoma, Washington, Jeremy Wood, Joshua Wood and Jacob all of Yelm, Washington, Kami Wood, Allen Wood, Dell Wood, Aaron Wood, and Krista Wood all of Jacksonville, Florida; and great grandchildren, Brandon Warchol, Johnathan Doane of Evansville, Illinois, Isabella and Michael Staley of Biloxi, Mississippi, Kylee Marler of Waynesville, North Carolina and Ayden Stephenson of Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

Visitation hours for Leland will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2004 with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Leland L. Stephenson will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 09, 2004 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home with the Reverend Willie Jones, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the V.F.W. Post 1186 or the Disabled American Veterans. Memorials may be left with the funeral home.
