Son of Thomas and Leonora Maria Temple Hoyne. James was educated in the public schools of Chicago. For over five years, James worked in the wholesale grocery house of Pollard, Doane, & Co. Upon the organization of the German Savings Bank of Chicago, he entered that institution as a teller. He was subsequently promoted to the office of assistant cashier. James continued in that capacity until the failure of the bank in 1877. He assisted in winding up the affairs of the bank and then engaged in the real estate business until his death. In 1874, James married Emma Josephine Bangs, daughter of Nathan Bangs, Jr and Susan Orr Buckmaster.
