He was in the Falls Fight and, in 1678, went to Canada to recover his family and others who had been captive there. He is often referred to as the "Hero of the Connecticut Valley". He was killed in the attack on Deerfield 29 February 1703/4, his body stripped and mutilated.

Husband of Martha Leonard Waite, married at Hartford,CT on Jun 8,1670.

Possible son of Thomas Waite (HERE?) and Eleanor (?Paine?) Waite of Portsmouth,RI according to some early sources, though he is not listed among their children in all cases. Nor is he listed among the children of John and Mary (Hills) Wait, who are also buried in this cemetery. His birth year is unknown.... the age at death on the monument suggests he was 54 when he died.

Children: Mary Waite Wells, Martha Waite, Sarah Waite Belding Allis(who married John Belding and Ichabod Allis), Canada Waite Smith, John Waite(father of John Wait), Joseph Waite, Jeremiah Waite, and Joseph Waite.

He was a petitioner of Hadley, Mass., Apr. 25, 1665, lived at Hatfield, 1668, and was slain by Indians at Deerfield, Mass., 1704. Bought lands at Brookfleld, Mass., with Thomas, of Rhode Island, Feb. 3, 1700, which were conveyed by his children May 34, 1717, who warranted the same against their uncle Thomas, Benjamin's brother. Benjamin was a soldier and Indian scout—a brave and hardy man. For an interesting story of the capture of his wife and children by the Indians, who took them to Canada; his long and determined pursuit and final recovery of them; the mother giving birth to a dau. while in captivity, who was named "Canada," and one of whose descendants founded Smith's College at Northampton, see Craft's History of Whateley, Mass., pp. 31, 32, 33 and 34. Benjamin m, June 8, 1670, Martha Leonard, b. May 15, 1649, dau. of John Leonard, of Springfield, Mass., (see Craft's History of Whateley, Mass., p. 593), and they had eight children; Mary (Ebenezer Wells), Martha, Sarah (John Belden), Canada (Joseph Smith), John, Joseph (died as infant), Jeremiah, & Joseph.
