US Congressman. He engaged in commercial work in Boston, moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1815, founded a young ladies’ seminary and was editor of the United States Gazette. He was a member of the Philadelphia City Council and a member of the State constitutional convention in 1837. In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first, Thirty-second, and Thirty-third Congresses, serving until 1855. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President James Buchanan as Minister to the Two Sicilies, serving from 1858 to 1860. Returning to America, he was president of the board of directors of Girard College Pennsylvania and a delegate to the International Prison Congress held at London, England, in 1872. He died in retirement at age 87.
