Marie Bortscheller, 89, of Remsen, died on Sept. 2, 2007 at her home in Remsen. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Rev. Timothy Johnson will officiate, along with Rev. William McCarthy and assisted by Deacon LeRoy Rupp.

Visitation will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. and there will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and Christian Mothers and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. Burial will be at St. Catherine Cemetery in Oyens.

Marie was born to Fred and Matilda (Wilberding) Rupp and raised on a farm near Maryhill and received her education at Maryhill and also Immaculate Conception Catholic High School at Cherokee, from which she graduated.

She was employed with the Cherokee REC until her marriage.

On Aug. 27, 1946, she married Edward Bortscheller at Cherokee. They farmed south of Oyens, until 1953 when they moved to a farm north of Remsen. Edward died April 29, 1980. She then moved into Remsen in Dec. 1981.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and church Guild, Christian Mothers, Mission Society and Happy Siesta Auxiliary. She embroidered the baptismal garments and helped make the communion host for St. Mary's Church for many years.

She loved to bowl, play cards, crochet, embroider and spend time with her children and grandchildren and attending their school functions. Her home was an open door every year during Oktoberfest hosting many friends and family.

She was preceded in death by: one son, Kenneth; two brothers, Walt and Don and his wife Bonnie Rupp; two sisters and their husbands, Laura and Tony Frangenberg, Eleanor and Bill Dahlem; two brothers-in-laws, Claude Bortscheller and Keith Clark.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Bev and Steve Essler of Thornton, Colo. Kathy and Mike Lawler of Elk Point, S.D.; two sons and their wives, Gary and Joyce of Elk Point, S.D., Dave and Sharon of Remsen; six grandchildren, Scott, Sara and Stacie Bortscheller, Allison and Alex Lawler, Brady "B. J." Davis; two brothers and their wives, LeRoy and Bonnie Rupp of Cherokee, Fred and Joan Rupp of Sioux City; four sisters, Irene Bortscheller of Marcus, Shirley and her husband Rudy Sims of Schaller, Norma Clark of Cherokee, Mary and her husband John O'Leary of Storm Lake; one sister-in-law, Marge Rupp of Denison; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
