Joined Civilian Conservation Corps and served in Colorado and New Mexico in 1937, 1938 and 1940. Entered armed services on November 25, 1940. Member of Battery F, 131st Field Artillery. The Lost Battalion was taken prisoner by the Japaneses Army on Java March 8, 1942, and liberated by the US Army September 6, 1945. Last of the eight Joplin members of the Lost Battalion.

Preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Nellie Eldridge Spencer; and two brothers, Dawson and Donnie Spencer.
