She was visiting her son Edward in Durham, NC, when she died of complications of diabetes. She was survived by children Mary Powe Starret and Mrs. S.J. Ervin; sons Edward K. Powe and Ellerbe Powe.
According to her obituary in the 14 February 1918 NEWS HERALD, "She was prominently connected throughout this section, being one of the Tate family, a daughter of the late Dr. William Tate. Her husband, the late Esquire W.E. Powe, who died a number of years ago, was one of the leaders in the civic and religious life of this community for years."
