Son of Maryfern (Martin) and Royal Jay Bartrum. He was graduated from University High School with the class of 1965 where he was the valedictorian. He was graduated magna cum laude from Williams College with a bachelor of arts degree, with highest honors in English and was Phi Beta Kappa. At Cambridge University, England he was the Keasbey Memorial Scholar and received a bachelor of arts honours and masters of arts degree. He was a Princeton University Fellow from 1972 to 1975 and received a PhD there in 1976. He had worked as a free lance editor and writer. He had been senior editor for the Edison Electrical Institute in Washington, D.C. and at the time of his death was the senior editor and speech writer for the postmaster general. He was survived by his parents, one brother Dr. Royal J Bartrum, Jr. and two nephews.
