Mathilda Rohr, daughter of George and Mary (Wassinger) Rohr, was born in Antonino on March 14, 1907 and baptized privately by her father. She was the sixth child in a family of fifteen. She began school in Antonino, but the family moved to Ness City when she was eight years old.
Early on she felt the desire to become a sister, and in 1923 when she finished the eighth grade, she went to Wichita with the Sisters, and then to Ruma for her postulacy and novitiate. She completed her school work in 1926 at St. John's Academy. Her first assignment was Windthorst, KS. In the ensuing years she taught in elementary schools in Kinsley, Liebenthal, and Andale, KS and Bison and Okarche, OK. She spent several years at St. Peter Claver mission in Wichita. Following this time, she spent several years in elementary schools in Pilsen and Olmitz, KS and Canute, OK. In 1954 she began teaching high school classes at Sacred Heart Academy, Canute, Okarche and Oklahoma City's Bishop McGuinness High School until 1970, when she was asked to direct a retirement program at the Provincial House. She remained there the rest of her years, directing retirement activities, craft work, substitute teaching and library work in Wichita schools.
In her last years she made stuffed toys for children, doing the work herself and assisting others in making hundreds of toys for the children.
All of Sister Mary Alban's sisters and brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; among them, Rev. Richard Rohr, OFM.
A prayer service will be held Sunday evening, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the Province Center Chapel on Monday, March 27, at 4:00 p.m., and burial will follow in the Province Cemetery, Adorers of the Blood of Christ.
