The Perry family moved to Denver from Chicago, Illinois, in 1887. Samuel M. Perry (1849-1929) was a prominent and successful Colorado coal and railroad businessman. An associate of David Moffat, he organized the Moffat Coal Company in Oak Creek. Perry also established the Leyden Coal Company and was president of the Oak Hills Coal Company. As president of the Denver Northwestern and the Northwestern Terminal railroad companies, he helped build the Denver and Salt Lake railroad that opened up Northwest Colorado.

Samuel Perry married Lottie Matson (1858-1935) in 1880. The couple had three children, Marjorie, Robert, and Charlotte.
