Mary was born in Ahoghil, Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland and came to the U.S. at just a few weeks old. She was the eldest of nine children. After graduating from Knox College in 1857, she taught school in the Toulon (IL) public school for four years. After her husband's death she lived independently well into her 80's before moving to California to be with her daughters.
