A retiree whose children include a local attorney has died in a traffic accident, but authorities do not believe that the death was caused by injuries suffered in the relatively minor crash.
Dewey Harold Marlow, 81, of Hwy. 127 S, was pronounced dead after arriving at Cumberland Medical Center and investigators believe Marlow may have died of natural causes, according to Trooper Bobby Barker, who investigated the accident.
"He was driving north into town on Hwy. 127 when he became ill," Barker said, as Marlow's 1992 GMC pickup approached the area of Sawmill Rd. A witness, William Lance of Lake Tansi, told the trooper that Marlow's pickup suddenly slowed to about 10 mph, and then left the roadway. The pickup traveled through a ditch and into a field, traveling down an embankment before coming to rest against a tree.
Barker said Lance chased the vehicle on foot in an attempt to stop it but was unable to do so.
"It was rolling slow enough to where the witness could keep up with it on foot but he became tangled in barbed wire and was unable to stop the truck," Barker reported.Cumberland County Fire Department and the county's ambulance service responded to the scene.
Marlow is the father of Robert Marlow, a Crossville attorney who now practices law in Shelbyville. Funeral arrangements were not available at press time Tuesday.
