Assigned to 90th Light Tank Company in the Army Reserves. In February 1942, reported for active duty with the rank of Captain. Hero of the Battle of the Bulge and one of the task force commanders in the race for Cologne. He was the first of the Allies to enter Cologne. As Lieutenant Colonel, was a Battalion Commander and later Regimental Commander in the 32nd Armor Regiment, Third Armored Division. Saw action from Omaha Beach to the Elbe River. Retired as Major General in 1970.

Also Commander of the UN prisoner of war Camp No. 1, Koje-Do island complex (Korea). In Vietnam, he was acting Commanding General of II Field Force (comprised of Vietnam Army Corps, three US divisions, an armored cavalry regiment and other US forces. Awards: Silver Star with three oak leaf clusters, Legion of Merit (3 times), Purple Heart (four times), Bronze Star (two times), Belgian Fourragere and the French Croix de Guerre.

Preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Lili Fischer Richardson; his brother, Walter P. Richardson; his sister, Gwendolyn Wolf; and his parents Dr. W. P. Richardson and Stella Couch Richardson.

CITATION: (UNCONFIRMED - Citation Needed): Walter B. Richardson, United States Army, is reported to have been awarded the Silver Star under the below-listed General Orders for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 3d Armored Division during World War II.
