U.S. Congressman. After serving in the Revolutionary War, he graduated from Princeton College in 1785, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1788 and began to practice law in Goshen, New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1800, entered the New York State Militia and rose to the rank of Major General. He also served in the New York State Senate (1801-04, 11-14) and again a member of the New York State Assembly (1808-09). In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jonathan Fisk and reelected to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819. After leaving Congress, he was clerk of Orange County, New York (1819-21) and county treasurer for several years until his retirement.
