U.S. Merchant Marine
Service No: 1486
Award: Mariners Medal
Address of Record: Brooklyn, New York

First Engineer CARL EINER HELLQUIST was on the SS Margaret, an American merchant ship, as it left San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 8, 1942. The unescorted, unarmed ship was bound for its homeport of New York with a cargo of 4508 tons of sugar.

On the 14th, German submarine U-571 spotted the steamer just off the coast of Cape Cod and began to stalk her. After about three hours, the U-boat fired one torpedo that detonated aft and ripped open the hull to the upper deck; the boiler exploded and the ship sank, stern first, within five minutes.

Several survivors were able to escape the sinking ship on rafts and a lifeboat, but none of the 29 Merchant Mariners known to be on board were ever found.
