Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame 1980 Inductee
Born in Evansville in 1909 and passed away in 1966 in Detroit, Pete played 13 years in the major leagues, from 1933-40 with Detroit and from 1941-45 with Boston, both of the American League. He had the opportunity to play in three World Series with Detroit, 1934,35 and 40. His batting average in the Series is an outstanding .327. In the 1935 Series his tremendous .385 batting average and .577 slugging average were instrumental in helping Detroit win over the Cubs. His nine doubles in World Series play is topped only by Frankie Frish and Yogi Berra.
Probably, his best season offensively was the ’37 season when he hit .331 and scored 116 runs. Defensively, the next season, he made only two errors with 301 putouts and 13 assists, his highest assist total.
