Herbert Francis ("Jim") Montague, son of George Lehman Montague and Emily Ida Herbert, was born 14 March 1895 at Lowell, Michigan. He was given the nickname "Jim" by his father who didn't like the name Herbert, his wife's maiden name. He married Ruth W. Sheppard December 1917; she was born 5 January 1902 at Columbus, Ohio, to Howard Sheppard and Flora Rector. After WWI, Jim worked as a salesman for several meat packing companies out of Chicago until about 1926 when he moved to the Grand Rapids , Michigan, area and owned various meat markets. From 1931 to 1948 he trucked produce and traded in cars, live stock and farm equipment.

He died 26 September 1954 in Kerr County, Texas. Ruth died 16 December 1959 at Ft. Meyers, Florida.
