Johnson Ledbetter wrote his will on 22 March 1860 and it was proven on 9 May 1865, therefore, we know he died before 9 May 1865.

Johnson was buried in an unmarked grave in his family graveyard, which was then known as the Ledbetter Family Cemetery and which was only a few yards from his front door. Today (2021) that cemetery is known as the Kelly Family Cemetery. One of Johnson's granddaughters married a Kelly and they raised their family in the house Johnson built. They also buried their dead in the family cemetery Johnson started, but it became known as the Kelly Family Cemetery. There is a pole fence around the cemetery which is located on a cliff overlooking the Etowah River. The old Johnson Ledbetter house has been torn down and a new home built there on the cliff. The new house is only a short distance from the cemetery. Kelly Cemetery is on private property. One must have permission to enter the property. The gates at the entrance are kept locked.

Dennis Stuart, a descendant of John Ledbetter who was a brother of Johnson Ledbetter, purchased and put up the double marker for Johnson and Nancy Ledbetter as well as the marker on the grave of Johnson's father, Richard Ledbetter III. Dennis said to please note that the date of deaths engraved on the marker for both Johnson and Nancy are incorrect and he apologizes for the error. The correct death dates entered on the Find A Grave Memorials for Johnson and Nancy Ledbetter were taken from probate and will records recorded in Dawson County, Georgia.

Many thanks to Dennis Stuart for his generosity! His act of kindness will enable future generations to find the graves of their ancestors. We are all indebted.
