Benjamin F. McMillan was born in Fort Covington, Franklin County, NY, the son of David Stiles & Harriett (Barbour) McMillan, an early farmer who also sold woolen goods. Benjamin was born on October 17, 1845. When Benjamin was just six years old his father moved the family to Malone, NY where Mr. McMillan founded the McMillan Woolen Mills. In 1864 the family moved to Wisconsin and settled a few miles north of Stevens Point, on the Plover River, where the senior McMillan started to manufacture lumber. The output of the McMillan mill was rafted down the Plover River to the lumbering markets of Dubuque, Davenport, Keokuk and St. Louis. The McMillans themselves ran a large wholesale yard at Keokuk, which was operated by Benjamin's older brother Charles V. McMillan.

In 1873, the senior McMillan retired from active work and Benjamin and Charles decided that a more western location would be desirable. After diligent prospecting they selected a location at the place five miles north of Marshfield, which is now McMillan. The mill, B.F. McMillan & Brothers, was running by 1874 and was equipped with a band saw, the first in the Pinery. The mill operated until 1911. These men started and operated several other establishments at this site.

In 1878, the McMillan brothers built a railroad spur three and one-half mile long from the village of Mannville. They used this line to move lumber with their own locomotive referred to as "Snorting Bill." A Lakeshore Railroad was built in 1891 from Marshfield to Wausau through the settlement and the McMillan Station was established.

Benjamin McMillan was married on April 30, 1873 at Constable, Franklin County, NY, to Miss Ada M. Beebee.

By 1899 the brothers were operating a mill at Ontonagon, Michigan, a retail lumber yard at Fond du Lac, a cold storage business in Ashland, WI and the Winnebago Furniture Company in Fond du Lac.

Benjamin McMillan died on November 12, 1918 and is buried in Forest Cemetery in Stevens Point, WI.
