Born February 10, 1917 in Winfield, she was the daughter of Oscar Otto and Bessie May (Fell) Riggs. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, Burden and Dexter.
Helen was united in marriage to Lee Wesley Johnson on February 10, 1935 on his family farm in Moore Prairie Community in Chautauqua County. Helen made a career out of making wedding and birthday cakes as well as cookies and donuts. She made her last wedding cake in 2006. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death on August 27, 1999.
Her passion was baking and making wedding cakes. She also loved flowers and spending time with her family. She was a member of Hackney Community Baptist Church and most recently attended New Hope Fellowship.
Her family includes: Her children: Lee Wayne Johnson and wife, Eloise of rural Dexter; Glenda L. Martin and husband, Richard of Dexter; Leo W. Johnson and wife, Sally of Oklahoma City; Frieda Jean Hauger of Chickasha, Oklahoma; and Bessie Marie Sterbenz and husband, Ken of El Dorado; Her brother: Bob Riggs and wife Mozel of Mesa, Arizona; Her sisters: Doris Ball of Arkansas City; Lucille Doolittle of Norwich; and Harriet Thompson and husband, Lee of Azel, Texas; Her sister-in-law: Maudie Riggs of Elm Creek, Nebraska; Her 20 grandchildren; 54 great grandchildren; and 55 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Ruhemma Jane Johnson, her granddaughter, Ann Marie Manuel, her brother, Clyde Riggs, her sister Esther Kincheloe, her son-in-law, Bob Hauger, and her brothers-in-law, Walter Ball, Paul Kincheloe, and Johnnie Doolittle.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will be held at 2:30 that afternoon at Moore Prairie Cemetery near Sedan in Chautauqua County. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A Memorial has been established in Helen's name for the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
