Dr. Gerald L. Byrd, a resident of Daphne and Omaha, died at his Omaha residence Friday after a short illness with cancer. He was 74.

Byrd, a native of Monroe County who was reared in the Tanner-Williams Community, graduated from Tanner-Williams High School in 1943.

He was the youngest of five brothers to serve in World War II. He was a top turret gunner on PV-2 patrol bomber in the U.S. Navy.

In 1947, he enrolled in Creighton University in Omaha and graduated from the Creighton School of Dentistry in 1953.

Byrd served two years in the U.S. Air Force at Offut Field in Omaha before opening a private dentistry practice in Alexander City, Ala. In Omaha, he operated a private practice and was a Creighton University Dental School instructor from 1956 until 1990. He also served as a medical missionary twice in the Dominican Republic.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Byrd; five children, Gerald Byrd Jr., David Byrd, Joel Byrd, Daniel Byrd and Eric Byrd; one sister, Agnes Simmons; and two brothers, William Ivy Byrd and James Carl Byrd; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church in Tanner-Williams.
