LTC James Carl Byrd (RET) - passed away in Atlanta on March 21, 2008. He was born in Frisco City, Alabama in 1924 to John Carl and Lula Mae Simmons Byrd. He was the eleventh of thirteen children. He graduated from Tanner Williams High School in 1941 and worked at Alabama Shipbuilding before entering the US Army in 1943. He served his country for thirty years receiving two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, and numerous other citations. He retired in 1973 and obtained a degree from John Marshell Law School in Atlanta. He was a practicing attorney until his death at age 83. Mr. Byrd is a survived by his wife, Betty Johnson Byrd; two sons, James Carl Byrd, Jr. and wife, Charlotte of Thomasville, AL and John Edward Byrd and wife Courtenany of Atlanta; one daughter, Elizabeth Byrd Jurjans and husband Janis of Rodanthe, NC; one sister, Agnes Byrd Simmons of Mobile, AL; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Dunwoody Baptist Church, 1445 Mt. Vernon Rd., Dunwoody, GA on Monday, March 24, at 10:00 AM and at Trinity Baptist Church, Mobile, AL on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away..." HM Patterson and Sons, Oglethorpe Hill in charge of arrangements.
