Born Estella Sarah Kendall in Cato,Wis.She was the third child of Seth & Katie Kendall. She married William Moor Gates on Aug. 6,1884 in Manitowoc Co. They soon moved to Michigan. Mr.Gates retired as Benzie Co. Mich. sheriff around 1920. Estella decided to take over this position and did so quite successfully- She became the first "female" sheriff in Michigan's history!!! Perhaps one of the first female sheriffs in the country!!
