Larry Eugene Ashby, 49, an Albion resident, died Wednesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane following surgery.

He worked at Palouse Industries in Pullman and was a charter member and first president of the Pullman chapter of People First.

He was born Sept. 28, 1942, at Grand Junction, Colo., to Samuel and Mildred Hooker Ashby. He grew up and attended schools there.

As a youth, he had served as a batboy for the Grand Junction Eagles, a semi-professional baseball team.

He married Jessie R. Herrera on Aug. 18, 1972, at Grand Junction. The couple moved to Albion, Wash., in 1980.

He was a member of the Grand Junction Congregational Church.

He enjoyed sports and took part in Special Olympics. He also loved animals and raising houseplants.

Survivors include his wife of Albion; his mother of Albion; and a brother, D. LeRoy Ashby of Pullman.

Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Albion Community Church with Rev. Bill Lyons officiating. Burial will follow at the Pullman I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
