On the evening of Feb 6, 1942, German submarine U-107 had spotted a freighter just east of Cape Hatteras, NC when the American merchant ship SS Major Wheeler came into view. The unarmed, unescorted steamer had departed Puerto Rico on the 3rd, bound for Philadelphia with a cargo of 4611 tons of sugar. The U-boat lost interest in the freighter and began stalking Major Wheeler. Only one torpedo was fired, but it hit amidships, causing Major Wheeler to sink within two minutes.
There were 36 men on board, including Radio Officer THOMAS RILEY HENSLEY; none survived.
