Margaret, the eldest of ten children who lived to adulthood, lived for a portion of her youth with her grandfather James Flexman, Sr. in Staines. He arranged for her to attend the Guildhall School of Music in London. She subsequently attended secretarial school and began a career as a secretary. She lived for eight years in Turkey and Greece before and during World War I while assisting the Balkans correspondent for the London Times. This period of her life is described in the book The English Secretary. After returning to England, she met and married Lyndon M. Comstock, who had enlisted in the Canadian Army under an assumed name, Peter Twist. Following his recovery from injuries suffered at the front, the couple went to the United States in 1919. They lived for the rest of their lives in the Chicago area and in southwestern Michigan. The couple had two children as noted in this memorial.
