Link served in the Canadian army in World War I under the pseudonym Peter Twist. He married Peggy Flexman in England in 1918 while he was stationed there. Link was shot in the face on the Western Front in France in 1918 but survived to return to the U.S. with Peggy in 1919.

He worked at many jobs during his life, often related to accounting or bookkeeping, and traveled through much of the U.S.
