SAN LUIS VALLEY - Berniece E. "Betty" Stanley was born near Limon, Colorado on March 4, 1920 to Frank Manuwal and Dora Phend Manuwal.

On March 10, 1938 she married Ray Sheesley, and they moved to the San Luis Valley where she spent her entire adult life. To this union, four children were born, Dora Mae, Roberta Faye, Wilma, and Willard.

Ray passed away in January 1981. Betty married Lowell Stanley on December 31, 1983.

Betty was a hard worker, working along side Ray in the fields. Later, she worked at the Ideal Cleaners and then become Head Cook at the Center School Cafeteria, as well as doing house cleaning for numerous ladies. She was an active member of the Center First Baptist Church until declining health kept her house bound. She loved to embroider, work puzzles, and work in her flower garden. After her eyesight became too bad to see to embroider, she spent many hours trimming canceled stamps for Town and Country Federated Club.

She leaves to mourn her passing, three children; Dora Mae (Gene) Crawford of Center, Colo: Wilma (Tom) Arbogast of Wichita, Kan., and Willard Sheesley of Highlands Ranch; and two step-children, Hershel (Elizabeth) Stanley of Tulsa, Okla., and Nada Lindeman of Billings, Mont. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Denise (Bill) Whitmer, Monte Vista; Don (Glenda) Crawford, Wheat Ridge; Scott Crawford, Wheat Ridge: Stephanie Arbogast, Sioux Falls, SD; Kim (Bryant) Davis, Gore, Ill; David (Dana) Arbogast, Guerneville, Calif.; Robert (Patti) Sheesley, Dolores; Eric (Karen) Sheesley, Highlands Ranch; 11 great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren. Three sisters also survive, Roma Engle, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, Katherine Rich, Oakdale, Minn, and Edna Cauling, Holyoke, sister in law Ethel Manuwal, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends, plus two special friends Nevada Yund and Sandra Marques.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and infant daughter, Roberta Faye, her husbands Ray Sheesley and Lowell Stanley, brother Samuel Manuwal, and sister Elizabeth Troyer.

Bernice "Betty" E. Stanley's services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Center, Colo, at 2 pm on Tuesday November 11. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in care of Strohmayer's Funeral Home. Published in the Alamosa Valley Courier.
