Seaman Second Class JOHN ZIMMERMAN, a U.S. Navy Armed Guard, was assigned to the American merchant ship Louisiana on Aug 17, 1942. The unescorted tanker, with a cargo of 92.5 barrels of gasoline, was enroute from Trinidad to Rio de Janeiro. About 200 miles from Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana (now known as Suriname), it was hit forward of the bridge by a torpedo from German U-boat 108. Louisiana increased speed, U-108 surfaced and gave chase, and Louisiana fired its stern gun at the sub while sending distress signals. A Norwegian merchant ship approached, but not understanding Louisiana's signals, passed between the tanker and the sub. Later, a plane flew over and dropped a bomb but U-108 submerged and the bomb missed. Around midnight, two torpedoes were fired, both hit and the tanker sank bow first, completely consumed in flames.
There were 41 Merchant Mariners and 8 Navy Armed Guards on board, none survived.
