Michael Atkins, 32, of Forest Glen Dr., Woodbridge, died at Griffin Hospital in Derby on Aug. 15, 2011 after a long illness. Born in New Haven, Dec. 17, 1978, he was a son of Drs. Stephen & Rosalind(Rayack) Atkins of Woodbridge. Beloved Brother of Joshua Atkins of Woodbridge. A graduate of The Hopkins School and Brown University, Michael continued his studies at Southern Ct. State University to become an educator. Funeral Services at Cong. B'nai Jacob.

Obituary published in the New Haven Register on August 17, 2011

Michael enjoyed writing and loved to travel. He joyously recounted his epic trip to Israel.

Michael was an angry person and this was misunderstood. He was fiercely independent and was frustrated by his physical limitations as the disease ravaged his body. He would become angry at people trying to help him because it meant the disease was taking another piece of his freedom away. He wanted to hold on to his ability to walk, to drive, and even to push his own wheelchair.

Michael struggled and fought bravely for many years but finally succumbed to mitochondrial disease.
