According to History and Genealogy of Fenwick's Colony, written by Thomas Shourds and published in 1876, the maiden name of Mary Pettit was Shourds. Page 46 says that Sarah Bassett, born 1759, married "Joseph Pettit, son of Jonathan and Mary Shourds Pettit of Tuckinton [sic]."
