Margaret Dell Barr, 85, passed away on September 10, 2008, at Scripps Mercy Hospital after numerous complications from surgery.

Margaret was born on December 13, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas, to Olie and Delta Mathis. After the death of her father when Margaret was only three years old, she moved with her mother and her older brother, Olie Jr., to Dallas. In 1935, her family moved to San Diego and settled in Ocean Beach where she met her life long friend, Shirley Foster. They considered themselves family right from the start and remained very close through the years. Margaret lost her only brother during the invasion of Okinawa in World War II.

She graduated from La Jolla High School in 1940 then went right to work for San Diego Trust While working there, she met her wonderful husband Sam Barr. They married in 1946 and together they owned and operated Popular Market, located in downtown San Diego and Fiesta Market, located on 30th and Adams. They were very active in the San Diego Food Industry and Grocers Association. They also supported many charities such as the San Diego Boys' Club, the Aseltine School, Home of Guiding Hands, and San Diego Hospice. Over the years, Sam and Margaret took many trips with Curly and Elenor Marso their very close friends and companions.

Margaret was widowed in March 1985 and then kept in close contact with Shirley Foster and Shirley's husband Cdr. John I. Foster. Annual treks to The Story Tellers Conventions were among their favorites. Margaret was also an avid Padre and Chargers fan and enjoyed attending the Del Mar Races with her friends.
