Richard L. 'Dick' Murphy, 70, of New Brighton, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 after a courageous struggle with acute leukemia. Richard was born March 31, 1941, in Beaver Falls, son of Viola J. (Watson) Murphy, Beaver Falls, and the late Leo D. Murphy. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, William J. Murphy.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Mary A. 'Bobbie' (Sheets) Murphy; sons, Michael J. Murphy of Virginia, Richard P. Murphy, New Brighton, and Mark (Kristine) Murphy, New Brighton; eight grandchildren, Kara, Anthony, Christian, Shana, Paige, Kian, Kyleigh and Kaden; his sister, Carol (Robert) Snyder, Beaver Falls; his brother, James (Joyce) Murphy, New Brighton, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard graduated from New Brighton High School and earned his Associate of Science Degree from the Community College of Beaver County. He spent 43 years of his career with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, Chicago, IL, and had worked in most major seaports in the United States and Caribbean as a marine survey engineer and quality control manager.

Dick was an avid reader and dabbled in the arts with sketching, watercolor painting and lapidary.

Friends will be received Monday, August 22, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, Rochester. Additional visitation will be held at the New Brighton Christian Assembly on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Samuel DeMarco, officiating. Private interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.

The family expresses their thanks to Dr. James Ferri and staff, the nurses from Concordia and Good Samaritan Hospice; William and Joyce Tutwiler; and son, Richard P. Murphy, who gave freely of their time.
