Mary Ellen Louisa Crawford was the daughter of Edward Newton Crawford and Ellen Ashe Crawford. The following tribute is copied from the family history:
"...a special tribute is given to child #3, Mary Ellen Louisa Crawford, who never married but spent a lifetime attending to and helping others. 'Sister' as she was affectionately called by her family could safely be depended upon in any emergency, whether family or as a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of Olivet Chuch, where she was treasurer for many years. She took an active part in all church activities and was a Sunday School teacher until her death.
"She was a devoted daughter, tenderly caring for each parent many months before their passing. Upon the death of her mother, the old home place with the grounds surrounding same were left to her with the provision that so long as she lived the house was always to be open to welcome any of the children and grandchildren at any time they should care to return. She ministered to two aged aunts and several brothers during their last illnesses. Two sisters-in-law [who died early] left many children to her care to whom she became a mother and carefully reared them. Being several years older than her youngest sister, she had the care and training of her, and this sister today blesses her memory."
Note: This was a very large house, and visitors during that time period commented that there were many people at two dinner tables every day.
