Mariah Helen (Bridgwater) Stephens, 98, of Moweaqua, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2005 in Moweaqua Nursing and Retirement Center.
Mrs. Stephens was born on January 26, 1906 near Henton in Shelby County, the daughter of Albert and Nellie (Barber) Bridgwater. She graduated from Moweaqua High School and attended Illinois State Teachers College at Normal for two years, earning a teaching degree. She taught in Shelby County for almost 30 years.
She married Purl O. Stephens on June 17, 1926 in Westervelt, Illinois. They had one daughter, Margaret June Stephens Harper, who passed away at the age of 19.
Helen and her husband devoted their life to evangelism and serving the Lord. They spent most of their married life on a small farm east of Clarksburg and traveled extensively in their evangelistic work. They were members of Washington United Methodist Church, near Stewardson and charter members of the Mode Campground Association. After Purl's death on April 12. 1980, Mrs. Stephens was able to live along until she was 91 with the help of her sister Beryl Rarick and many kind neighbors and friends. She then moved to the Moweaqua Nursing and Retirement Center where she remained until her death.
She is survived by one sister, Beryl Rarick of Moweaqua.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter; two brothers, Milton and Augustus Bridgwater; and one sister, Winifred Bohlen.
Services: Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville.
